Tandem stills + motion is a fresh, new stock photography and HD video clip licensing company specializing in the recent convergence of stills and motion. Tandem is a streamlined, modern company with a solid foundation built specifically to address the challenges facing today’s image makers in our changing economy. A division of the successful production company, Tandem Media, Inc, Tandem has built, from the ground up, a new, state-of-the-art software that will allow art buyers to search through cutting-edge imagery faster and more efficiently than almost any other stock licensing company.
Tandem’s business philosophy begins with the creators of our content – the world’s best photographers and filmmakers. We believe that a company cannot stand on it’s own without the valuable contributions made by these creative individuals. To this end, Tandem not only offers above-average royalty payments to its contributors, but also offers a unique and unprecedented profit-sharing model. Much like a cooperative, we believe that the more you put in to the company, the more you should get out. Therefore, at the end of every year, we cut bonus checks from our profits to each contributor who puts their hard-earned creative works into our archive.
IAN SHIVE, Founder & CEO
Ian Shive – photographer, author, film and television producer, conservationist and innovative businessperson – has been praised as the “leading chronicler of America’s National Parks.” In 2011, he was honored with the prestigious Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography.
Ian’s passion for photography has led him to scale heights that most veteran photographers have yet to reach, resulting in him becoming one of the most published nature photographers in the world. An inquisitive and tireless explorer, avid climber and trained scuba diver, Ian has faced fierce conditions as the first photographer to document a search-and-rescue mission on Alaska’s Mt. McKinley in Alaska, dove the pristine depths of remote Micronesian coral reefs, and slept beneath the stars of some of our country’s grandest National Parks, while working regularly on assignment with The Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, and the National Parks Conservation Association – the largest environmental non-profits in the world.
Ian is also the best selling-author of The National Parks: Our American Landscape, his book that has played a role in shaping diplomacy efforts throughout war-affected parts of the world. Additionally, his images of monolithic-scale, majestic landscapes; tender portraits of nature’s intimate side; and notably the role that humans play in nature, have regularly appeared in Backpacker Magazine, Sunset, Outside, National Geographic, Men’s Journal and thousands of other well-known publications, television shows and media. In his role as conservationist, Ian has lobbied before Congress numerous times including as part of team on behalf of the impact on the environment by the border fence in Mexico. In April 2014, he presented his images to a sold-out crowd at The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
A studied and innovative pioneer of new standards in photography, motion picture and protecting the rights of photographers, Ian extended his mark on the photography industry as the founder and CEO of Tandem Stills + Motion, Inc. (tandemstock.com), one of the world’s leading collections of licensable photographs and motion clips. Representing the archives of over 700 photographers worldwide, the Los Angeles, California, based company has established itself as a global leader in its genre by combining premium digital content with the power of its proprietary software. Tandem targets three markets—creative professionals (advertising and graphic design), the media (print and online publishing), and corporate (in-house design, marketing and communication departments). The company’s photographer-centric business model has been highlighted in respected art and photography organizations around the country including the American Society of Media Photographers, The National Press Photographers Association, the New York Times and Wired.com.
Recognizing the potential of the proprietary software upon which Tandem Stock was built, in 2011 Tandem launched Tandem Vault (TandemVault.com), a state-of-the-art, cloud based digital asset management solution. Since it’s inception, Tandem Vault has become an industry standard for small businesses and corporations looking for a visual-based DAM system to manage their assets. As one of the first DAM systems in the world to seamlessly integrate photos, graphic files and video in one environment, it has quickly gained market share and a high pedigree client list including companies such as Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, Ted/TedX, AirBnB and hundreds more. Tandem Vault now manages literally hundreds of thousands of users and millions of assets in one of fastest, user-friendly and modern hosting environments in the world.
When he’s not running operations at Tandem or fulfilling an assignment, Ian shares his knowledge as an instructor of photojournalism at the University of Southern California.
